Cross Border

Only if you do the Richtersveld section SA-NAM adventures

Please be sure to read the following documents thoroughly in order to ensure that your border crossing is problem-free.

The only road back to the starting point on the South African side is on the Namibian side as it is impossible to travel back on the South African side through the Richtersveld mountains. It is, therefore, necessary to pass through the Customs & Immigration if you do the Richtersveld section from the South African side.

  1. Adult South African citizens only need a valid passport. In addition to their own passport, minors need an unabridged birth certificate and an affidavit from any absent parent as per their unabridged birth certificate.
  2. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the intended date of departure.
  3. Passports should also have at least 2 blank pages for entry of stamps. The blank pages cannot include the “endorsement” page at the back of the book.

Non-South Africans need to make sure about the Namibia Visa requirements with their relevant local travel authorities:

Namibian Tourism Board:

021 422 3298 (Cape Town)

011 702 9602 (Johannesburg)

Namibian Embassy:

021 419 2810 (Cape Town)

012 481 9100 (Pretoria)

Vehicle Requirements:

Valid driver’s license, vehicle registration documents and a ZA sticker if you travel into Namibia. Please make sure that your vehicle is licensed and if the driver is not the owner of the vehicle that the owner gives you a letter of permission to drive the vehicle over the border.

These are only the most common points and clients should check with the Department of Home Affairs whether they have everything they need to cross the border by following the link below: http://www.dha.gov.za/

Please follow these instructions when arriving at Vioolsdrift

Upon arrival at Vioolsdrift first report to the customs officials at the border post, then have your passports stamped to leave South Africa. Proceed over the bridge to Namibia where you will be required to fill in a form before your passport is stamped. When asked where you are staying, write “Aussenkehr, Orange River” and the duration of the stay. Once the Namibian authorities have stamped your passport, turn around and drive back over the bridge to South African (do not pay any road fund taxes – you are not going into Namibia with your vehicle). At the South African border post explain that you are going to do a river trip with Orange River Rafters and that you have come to have your passport stamped out of South Africa and into Namibia. Please don’t let them stamp you back into South Africa at this stage. On the last day of your trip, you will be picked up on the Namibian side of the river and then you will be stamped out of Namibia and into South Africa. Upon arrival at base camp (after your passport is stamped) please hand in your passport and all necessary border documentation to your Head Guide for safe keeping.
